It was an enlightening moment — realising that there is no expiry date on achieving the career goals I have for myself. Life is a vast playground to be filled with side projects and professional objectives. For the charmed among us, it doesn’t end when we hit thirty or forty. The average human lifespan grants many years beyond these. In our uber-rushed culture, this is surprisingly easy to forget. We have time.
We overestimate vastly what we can achieve in a day, and wildly underestimate what we can achieve in a year.
What about those of us whose mortal clock has revealed itself to be fragile? Maybe the remaining todays of those lives are instead to be appreciated. Treasured. New goals will be waiting in the next life. I hope this will remind the time-wealthy among us to use whatever time we’ve kindly been granted, to build something valuable for ourselves.
I’m reminded of a wise quote attributed to… I’ve forgotten who. ‘We overestimate vastly what we can achieve in a day, and wildly underestimate what we can achieve in a year.’
Of the journey to achieving anything of value and meaning, of crafting a particular career/ business/ side project, I will say this — don’t give up too quickly. Take time. It’s on your side. Follow your vision. Push flat-out when you have the energy and move slowly when you don’t.
Don’t stop.
Best,
Rachel
